Stuart Fails to Save the Universe streams on HBO Max in the United States, on HBO Max in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and on JioHotstar in India. Season 1 premiered on 23 July 2026 in the US and arrived a day later, on 24 July, in the UK and in India. It runs for 10 episodes released weekly rather than in one drop, with the finale scheduled for 24 September 2026.

As of 30 July 2026, one episode is available in every region: episode 1, "Spoiler: Gary Dies". Episode 2, "Spoiler: Bert Is Magic", lands on 30 July at 9pm ET / 6pm PT in the US, which is 2am BST on Friday 31 July in the UK and 6:30am IST on Friday 31 July in India. The other eight have not been released. Platform by platform

United States

HBO Max is the only place to stream it. It is an HBO Max original, so there is no Netflix, Disney+ or Peacock version. It is also watchable through the HBO Max add on channel on Amazon Prime Video, which is the same content behind different billing. New episodes go live Thursdays at 9pm ET / 6pm PT.

United Kingdom and Ireland

HBO Max launched directly in the UK and Ireland on 26 March 2026, and the show is on it. Sky and NOW customers can also get it through a NOW Entertainment and HBO Max membership rather than a separate standalone subscription. UK episodes land in the early hours of Friday, because the release is pinned to the US Thursday evening slot.

India

In India it streams on JioHotstar, which carries HBO Max content locally. Episode 1 went live on 24 July 2026 and new episodes follow weekly on Fridays, reported at 6:30am IST. This is the one region where the platform genuinely differs, so if you have been hunting for it on HBO Max from India, that is why you could not find it. How long is each episode?

Shorter than a normal sitcom half hour. Reference listings quote a nominal runtime of about 26 minutes, but the episodes themselves vary a lot: reporting on the season says one episode runs 15 minutes, four run 18 minutes, and the longest reaches 25 minutes. Chuck Lorre has said the decision was creative rather than budgetary, and that stretching the stories out further would be, in his word, "padding". The practical upshot is that the whole season is likely to run closer to three hours than five.

Do I need to have watched The Big Bang Theory first?

No, but you will get noticeably more out of it if you have. Reviewers who watched the season ahead of release have said you do not need the original show to follow the plot, and that prior viewing mainly pays off in Easter eggs and recognition rather than comprehension. The central premise is self explanatory within the first few minutes.

Who Stuart is, if you are new

Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, ran the comic book store the main characters of The Big Bang Theory hung around in. He was a recurring background figure for years, mostly used as a punchline about how badly his life was going, before becoming a more regular presence. He was never a lead. That is part of the premise here: the franchise has handed its universe saving assignment to its least likely character.

What you actually need to know going in

Stuart breaks the quantum interference device built by Leonard Hofstadter, Sheldon Cooper and Howard Wolowitz, triggering a multiverse collapse, and spends the season trying to get that same machine repaired so reality can be put back. Those three are the plot's inciting cause, not its cast. Helping Stuart are Denise, his on and off girlfriend, played by Lauren Lapkus; Bert Kibbler, a geologist, played by Brian Posehn; and Barry Kripke, a physicist, played by John Ross Bowie. All three were recurring characters on the original show, so if a name means nothing to you, that is normal even for people who watched all 12 seasons.

If you want the background first, all 12 seasons stream on HBO Max in the US. In the UK, the series is on Netflix. In India it is on both Netflix and JioHotstar. That regional split is worth knowing, because plenty of "where to watch Big Bang Theory" answers online only cover the US.

Confirmed and already on screen

Kunal Nayyar returned in the premiere as an alternate universe Raj Koothrappali. Penn Jillette and Teller both appear in episode 1 as themselves. Riki Lindhome, who played Ramona Nowitzki on the original show, is confirmed for episode 2 via an officially released clip, so she is next up rather than already seen.

Announced but not on screen yet

Christine Baranski, who played Beverly Hofstadter, is confirmed for the season. So are Joshua Malina, Wil Wheaton reprising the fictionalised version of himself, and Jon Cryer, a long time Chuck Lorre collaborator from Two and a Half Men. Chuck Lorre also confirmed at the show's Comic-Con panel that Kaley Cuoco and Melissa Rauch will appear as alternate versions of Penny and Bernadette rather than the originals. As of 30 July 2026, none of those six have actually turned up on screen, so treat them as scheduled arrivals across the remaining episodes rather than things you have missed.

Reported but unconfirmed: there is no announcement of any kind that Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Simon Helberg or Mayim Bialik will appear. Parsons has previously said he would rather not play Sheldon again. Anything you read claiming a confirmed Sheldon cameo is speculation.

Is it any good? The scores as of 30 July 2026

Rotten Tomatoes has it at 76% from 38 critic reviews, with an average rating of 6.9 out of 10, and a Popcornmeter audience score of 81%. Metacritic has it at 62 out of 100 from 19 critics, which its scale labels generally favourable, alongside a 7.6 user score. Those are live figures that will move as more critics file and more episodes land, so the date matters.

The reviews themselves are genuinely split rather than uniformly warm. TheWrap was enthusiastic, calling it a strange but addictive spinoff and praising the genre hopping structure. TV Guide was not, rating it 5 out of 10 and arguing it does not make a strong case for existing beyond being different. That spread is the honest picture: it is a divisive show, not a consensus hit or a consensus flop.

Tone, format and age rating

This is not The Big Bang Theory with a new lead. It is a single camera comedy with no laugh track, which makes it only the second single camera series in the franchise after Young Sheldon. It carries a TV-MA rating in the US. Common Sense Media flags heavy profanity, on screen deaths played for comedy including blood and severed limbs, crude sexual dialogue, and alcoholism used as a punchline, and recommends it for 14 and up.

Structurally, each episode drops the group into a different reality with a different genre logic, which is why the season has drawn Rick and Morty comparisons rather than sitcom ones. DC Comics president Jim Lee appeared at the show's Comic-Con panel on 23 July 2026 to tease a DC heavy episode later in the season, confirming Mr. Freeze appears in the trailer and that he made exclusive cover art for a tie in comic. He did not say which episode it is.

HBO Max is running an official companion podcast alongside the series, hosted by Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton, with a new instalment each week following the episode. It covers Easter eggs, alternate universe cameos and behind the scenes detail, with interviews featuring Lorre, Bill Prady, Zak Penn and the main cast. It is on HBO Max as well as standard podcast platforms, and it is the most reliable weekly source for references you missed.

The premiere establishes that an alternate universe Raj is the only person capable of repairing the quantum interference device, and then has Kripke fatally shoot him early on, which sets the tone for how disposable this show treats familiar faces. Raj dies before the repair is finished, so reality is not restored. Stuart, Kripke and Bert end the episode in yet another universe, one that looks calm until the camera catches the glowing green implants in everyone's necks, and Denise is left stranded in the post-apocalyptic world they came from.

Episode 2 stays in that world. The implant is an AI chip that delivers a painful shock for any hint of negativity, which is why the place reads as peaceful. Bert and Kripke's search for Leonard and Sheldon takes them to Caltech and to Ramona Nowitzki's desk, where Kripke loses his temper and gets zapped for it.

Will there be a season 2?

Not announced. As of 30 July 2026 there has been no renewal from HBO Max, which is normal for a show two episodes into its first run. Any second season date you see quoted is speculation.
