Ghost Rider 2028: Ryan Gosling Cast, Where to Watch 1 and 2

Marvel Studios has announced a new Ghost Rider film starring Ryan Gosling, with Shawn Levy directing. Kevin Feige made the announcement during Marvel Studios' Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday 25 July 2026, and the only release timing Marvel gave was the year: 2028. No month, no day, no plot. Marvel did not name the character on stage, but trade reporting has Gosling playing Johnny Blaze.

If you landed here searching for "Ghost Rider 2" or "Ghost Rider 3", here is the short version before anything else. There are exactly two Nicolas Cage Ghost Rider films: Ghost Rider (2007) and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. A third Cage film was never made, never greenlit and never officially announced, so any list claiming to tell you where to stream "Ghost Rider 3" is describing a film that does not exist. Both of the real ones are streaming right now, and the platforms are different in the United States, the United Kingdom and India. Full breakdown further down.

    What Marvel actually confirmed

Marvel's own write-up of the panel, published on Marvel.com on 25 July 2026, is the cleanest source on this. It confirms four things and no more.

    • The film exists and is in development. Feige announced it from the Hall H stage at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
    • Ryan Gosling stars. He walked out on stage and told the crowd this was "a character I've wanted to play for a very long time", per Marvel's report of the panel.
    • Shawn Levy directs. Levy previously directed Deadpool & Wolverine for Marvel Studios.
    • It arrives in 2028. That is the entire release detail Marvel provided.

The Hollywood Reporter and ComicBookMovie both add that Jonathan Tropper is writing the script. Tropper also wrote Star Wars: Starfighter, the Gosling and Levy film that Disney has dated for 28 May 2027. Levy told the Hall H audience that he and Gosling had been kicking Ghost Rider ideas around in their downtime on the Starfighter shoot, which is how the project came together.

Gosling is playing Johnny Blaze, not Robbie Reyes

This distinction matters more than it sounds. Ghost Rider is not one character. Johnny Blaze is the original: a motorcycle stunt rider who takes on a demonic bond and burns. Robbie Reyes is a later, separate Ghost Rider who drives a car rather than a bike.

The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and Gizmodo all report Gosling as Johnny Blaze. That puts the new film in the same lineage as the Cage movies rather than the television version. Gabriel Luna played Robbie Reyes in season four of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., which aired across 2016 and 2017, and that is a different Ghost Rider entirely.

The release date: 2028 is confirmed, "May 2028" is not

You will see "May 2028" floating around, and it is worth being precise about where that came from. In its Comic-Con coverage, Rolling Stone referred to the project as "May 2028-bound". That is the outlier.

Marvel's own announcement, The Hollywood Reporter, Empire, Complex, ComicBookMovie and ABC News' Good Morning America all gave the year only. Levy's closing line from the stage, as Marvel reported it, was a promise to see the crowd in 2028, with no month attached.

The Movie Database entry for the film reflects the same thing: it is listed under Marvel Studios and Kevin Feige Productions with a status of "Planned" and no release date field filled in at all.

So: 2028 is confirmed. A specific month is not. Marvel is widely reported to be holding several untitled theatrical dates across 2028, and the studio has not publicly said which one Ghost Rider takes. Treat any month you see as an educated guess until Marvel dates it.

    What has not been confirmed

Almost everything else. As of the end of July 2026, Marvel has not announced:

    • A plot. ComicBookMovie noted plainly that no plot details were revealed at the panel.
    • Any supporting cast or villain.
    • A rating. Cage's old complaint that the Sony films should have gone R-rated has resurfaced in coverage, but Marvel has said nothing about the rating of the new film.
    • A title beyond "Ghost Rider".
    • How, or whether, it connects to the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline.
    • A start date for production.

Given that Gosling and Levy are both attached to Star Wars: Starfighter for May 2027, a 2028 theatrical date is a realistic runway rather than an aggressive one, but nothing about the shooting schedule has been made public.

Ghost Rider 3 does not exist. Here is what happened instead

"Ghost Rider 3" is one of the most persistent dead-end searches in comic book film. There is no correct answer to it, because the film was never made.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance underperformed. Per The Movie Database, it took roughly 132.6 million dollars worldwide against a 57 million dollar budget, down sharply from the first film's 228.7 million dollars on a 110 million dollar budget. After that, the character's film rights reverted from Sony to Marvel Studios in 2013, as both ScreenRant and SlashFilm have reported. That reversion ended any possibility of Sony making a third Cage film.

Cage himself closed the door around the same time, saying a further Ghost Rider film was possible but that it would not be with him. He has repeated versions of that since. There was no cancelled production, no shelved cut, no "Ghost Rider 3" with a release date that slipped. It simply never got past being an idea.

What Marvel did instead was go to television. Robbie Reyes turned up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season four in 2016. Hulu then ordered a standalone Ghost Rider series from Marvel Television in May 2019, announced alongside Helstrom, with Gabriel Luna reprising Robbie Reyes. It never got made. On 25 September 2019, roughly five months after the order, the trades reported that Hulu would not move forward with it, citing a creative impasse between the streamer and the show's creative team. Marvel Television was folded into Marvel Studios that December, but the Ghost Rider series had already been dropped by then.

The Gosling film is therefore the character's first Marvel Studios movie, and the first big-screen Ghost Rider in more than fifteen years.

Where to watch the two Nicolas Cage Ghost Rider films

Streaming rights on these two films are messy and they do not travel together. Availability below was checked against The Movie Database's provider data on 31 July 2026. Rights rotate, so treat this as a snapshot.

    Ghost Rider (2007)

Directed by Mark Steven Johnson. Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze, Eva Mendes as Roxanne Simpson, Sam Elliott as Carter Slade, Wes Bentley as Blackheart and Peter Fonda as Mephistopheles. Runtime 114 minutes. It opened in US theatres on 16 February 2007 and in UK cinemas on 1 March 2007.

    • United States: included with a Starz subscription, including the Starz channel add-ons on Amazon, Apple TV and Roku, and also carried on Philo and YouTube TV. Rent or buy from Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube and Fandango at Home. Plex offers it as a rental.
    • United Kingdom: no subscription home at the moment. It is rent or buy only, from Apple TV, Amazon Video, Rakuten TV, Google Play, Sky Store and YouTube.
    • India: included with Lionsgate Play, either direct or as an Apple TV or Amazon channel. Rentals are available from Apple TV, ZEE5 and Amazon Video, and Apple TV also sells it outright.

    Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance

Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor. Cage returns as Blaze, with Idris Elba as Moreau, Ciarán Hinds as Roarke, Violante Placido as Nadya and Fergus Riordan as Danny. Runtime 96 minutes.

    • United States: included with Sony Pictures Core as an Amazon channel. Otherwise rent or buy from Amazon Video, Apple TV, Google Play, YouTube and Fandango at Home, with a rental option on Plex.
    • United Kingdom: rent or buy only, from Apple TV, Rakuten TV, Amazon Video, Google Play and YouTube. No subscription service currently carries it.
    • India: the thinnest of the three. Rent from Apple TV or Amazon Video, or buy from Apple TV. There is no subscription home for it in India right now.

Why the sequel is dated 2011 in some places and 2012 in others

You will see both years quoted, sometimes in the same article. Both are defensible. The Movie Database logs the film's earliest release as 10 December 2011, a limited screening at Austin's Butt-Numb-A-Thon, while its wide theatrical release in the United States, the United Kingdom and India was all on 17 February 2012. If you are searching for it and one year returns nothing, try the other.

    Frequently asked questions

Is there a Ghost Rider 3 with Nicolas Cage?

No. Only two Cage films were made, in 2007 and 2011 to 2012. A third was never produced or officially announced, and the character's film rights returned to Marvel Studios in 2013.

When is the new Ghost Rider movie coming out?

2028. Marvel announced the year at San Diego Comic-Con on 25 July 2026 and has not attached a month or a specific date to it.

Is Ryan Gosling playing Johnny Blaze?

Yes. Trade reporting from The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and Gizmodo has him as Johnny Blaze, the original Ghost Rider, rather than Robbie Reyes.

Who is directing the new Ghost Rider?

Shawn Levy, who directed Deadpool & Wolverine. Jonathan Tropper is writing the script, per The Hollywood Reporter.

Is the new Ghost Rider connected to the Nicolas Cage films?

No. The Cage films were Sony productions. This is the character's first Marvel Studios film and is not a continuation of them. Marvel has not said how it fits into the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Where can I watch Ghost Rider free in India?

The 2007 film is included with a Lionsgate Play subscription in India, so it costs nothing extra if you already subscribe. Spirit of Vengeance is rental only in India at the moment. Neither is on a genuinely free ad-supported tier there.

Will Nicolas Cage appear in the new Ghost Rider?

Nothing has been announced. Marvel has confirmed Gosling and no other cast. Any Cage cameo talk is speculation.
