The finale is structured in three acts: the long-rumored Butcher / Homelander showdown, a Starlight subplot that pays off the entire S4 + S5 thread, and a closing montage that ties back to Episode 1 of Season 1 in a way that lands harder than most series finales manage. There’s one major death in the first 20 minutes that everyone is arguing about online. There’s one resurrection at the 50-minute mark that solves a plot problem the show has had since Season 3. And there’s a final scene that pretty clearly sets up the announced Gen V Season 3 + the rumored adult-cast spinoff.

An honest take on the finale

For five seasons The Boys has done two things excellently and one thing badly: it absolutely understood Homelander, it absolutely understood the satire of celebrity worship, and it could never quite figure out what to do with Butcher beyond “guy who’s angry.” The finale doesn’t fix Butcher exactly, but it gives him an ending that earns the character’s arc instead of just resolving it. Karl Urban is doing genuinely different work in the last twenty minutes than he’s done across the whole run. Antony Starr is, as always, doing the most uncomfortable acting on television.

The big swing is the ending. It’s not a clean win or a clean tragedy · it sits in the uncomfortable middle that the show has always insisted is the only honest place for a superhero story to land. Some fans will be furious. The right ones will be quiet for an hour after.
