The received wisdom in the 90s was that 80s science fiction would look embarrassing within a decade, because the effects were models and puppets and matte paintings and digital was obviously going to make all of that obsolete. It went the other way. A physical model photographed in real light still reads as an object forty years later. Early CGI, which looked astonishing in 1995, is the thing that dates now.

That is most of why 80s sci-fi movies still hold up on a modern screen. The other part is that the constraints forced a discipline about what you actually showed. If the creature is expensive and only half-convincing in full light, you shoot around it, and shooting around it turns out to be scarier and more durable than showing everything. The decade's best science fiction is full of restraint that started as a budget problem.
